Samantha came to painting through new media, and video and photography are still the instruments she uses to look at a place. She holds the frame still, and then she paints it, and something happens on the way to the canvas. The edges soften. The detail lets go. The place stays completely real and becomes impossible to find.
Anyone who has tried to picture a road they drove years ago knows the feeling. You remember the light and the temperature of the air. You do not remember the leaves.
The Poetry of Stillness gathers fifteen paintings made between 2018 and today, and you can watch her working this out across all of them. In several canvases, thinned paint runs the full height of the surface, like rain on a windscreen or a fault in a video signal. It is a quiet, honest reminder that the image passed through a lens before it arrived here.
