In Self-portrait at home, Carla Sutera Sardo turns the camera on herself during the pandemic, using the granular surface of a satin glass pane as subject and filter. The glass does not simply obscure, it mediates, transforming the material of the image into an emotional state. The gaze turns inward, suggesting a figure absorbed in thought, simultaneously protected and contained by the domestic space around her.
Shot in black and white, the image strips away distraction and concentrates entirely on light, form, and surface. The result is a work of quiet intensity where identity presents itself as fragments and reforms through contact . The domestic interior, during a period of collective withdrawal from the world, becomes the only available landscape.
Carla Sutera Sardo is a self-taught photographer based in Agrigento, Sicily. Her practice focuses on the female figure within landscape and domestic space, and her work has been published in Vogue Italia and L'Œil de la Photographie and recognized by the Sony World Photography Awards. She is represented by Nomad Art Collective, Sambuca di Sicilia.
Self-portrait at home is presented as part of IL BIVIO III: Mosaica, Coexistence without Resolution, on view at Nomad Art Collective, Sambuca di Sicilia (AG), May 9 through July 4, 2026. This work is available for purchase.
