In Il versante Sud delle Madonie, Pietro Motisi photographs the southern face of the Madonie mountains from an elevated vantage point. A dense mass of fog swallows the valley, leaving only a narrow strip of green hillside and the faint outline of mountains on the horizon, a landscape defined by what it withholds as much as what it shows.
Shot on analogue medium format film, the image carries a softness entirely appropriate to a subject about the limits of visibility. The pale grey of the sky merges almost imperceptibly with the fog below, collapsing the distinction between atmosphere and earth.
Il versante Sud delle Madonie belongs to Motisi's ongoing series Sicilian Fantasma, in which he turns his lens on a Sicily that resists the picturesque, proposing instead a landscape that is veiled, interior, and elusive.
Pietro Motisi is a Palermo-based photographer working in analogue medium format film. His practice engages with landscape, memory, and the material qualities of the photographic image. His project CEMENTO was awarded the 2012 Reginald Salisbury Travel Award and led to a residency at the Goethe Institut.
Il versante Sud delle Madonie is an edition of 5. It is presented as part of IL BIVIO III: Mosaica, Coexistence without Resolution, on view at Nomad Art Collective, Sambuca di Sicilia (AG), May 9 through July 4, 2026. This work is available for purchase.
