The forest fills the frame, greens turning toward gold, rising into cloud. A pale river opens through the trees and widens as it comes forward, carrying the light with it. Lower down, the woods and the water begin to loosen their hold on the image. The paint thins into a soft green field and runs, long trails of white and dark red and deep green drawn slowly downward. The forest is there and it is also letting go, held for a moment before the surface releases it.

Samantha Torrisi was born in Catania and lives and works on the slopes of Mount Etna. Trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Catania, she paints from the volcano's weather and the light of the Sicilian horizons, letting landscape and memory settle into one another. Her practice moves between painting, photography and video, and her work is held in public and private collections in Italy and abroad.
