In Cuttigghiu, Bono reinterprets a vanishing ritual of Sicilian life—the courtyard gatherings of widowed women dressed in black, exchanging stories, secrets, and gossip. These ceramic figures draw from this social ritual, common across Mediterranean villages, and infuse it with sculptural elegance and symbolic weight.
With minimalist yet expressive forms, Bono captures the essence of these women—poised, cloaked, and quietly powerful. Their dark surfaces and stylized silhouettes are intentionally evocative of traditional African sculpture, whose influence Bono channels to strip away ornament and reveal archetypal strength. The result is a dialogue between cultures: the Sicilian mourning figure as both witness and monument, everyday and eternal.
These women become icons—not only of Sicilian memory, but of shared human experiences: grief, resilience, solidarity, and voice.
